May 5 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Sunday, May 5th starting at 3pm at 899 Portland St. we will be hosting BLK Joy. The BLK Joy event is intended to bring together Black artists who practice all art forms, and stand on all levels in terms of professional designation, recognition, etc. It will be a space for people to share and bask in the joy of Black excellence in art, such as poetry, spoken word, passage reading, storytelling, song, dance, musical instrument performance, comedy, etc. This will be an open mic event for individuals of all cultural backgrounds, communities, racial and gender identities, sexual orientations, religions, beliefs and abilities. The BLK Joy event is intended to create an inclusive space for all, but in celebration of Black artists throughout our region. This celebration is meant to be shared with all!
There will be many talented participating artists: Tara Taylor, Nicole Johnson, Charlene Carr, Julia Tynes, Pheeny Foxx, and Leah A. Finlay behind the mic as MC! We will also have exciting food specials for the day, and some pretty incredible raffle prizes (stay tuned for more details!).
To celebrate the event, we have collaborated with our friends Chang is Brewing to relaunch The Cherry Brook Wheat, our original collab with the wonderful Change is Brewing Crew! To mark this event, 15% of all taproom and draught sales at our Portland St. location that day will be donated to the Pearleen Oliver Education Fund of the Black Cultural Centre. In addition, 50 cents from each can sold of The Cherry Brook Wheat will also be donated to the Pearleen Oliver Education Fund of the Black Cultural Centre (Rozina to add Insta tags). This educational fund supports programs and activities at the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia in memory of a community leader and trailblazer Pearleen Oliver. Pearleen Oliver was a writer, historian, educator and also the founder of the Nova Scotia Association for the Advancement of Coloured People. She was a strong advocate for equity in schooling, and was an active voice against racial segregation within the school system; of note during her own schooling career, she was interested in studying nursing, but at the time when she graduated from high school, Black students were not allowed to study the profession. Her advocacy for representation of Black students in nursing programs, directly propelled Gwenyth Barton and Ruth Bailey to become the first Black nursing students to graduate from nursing school in Canada in 1948. We are thrilled to raise funds in collaboration with Leah A. Finlay, The Black Cultural Centre and the Change is Brewing Collective for this wonderful educational initiative
