Museum Interpreter
Rate:                     $10.15 per hour (35 hrs. per week)
Start Date:          June 4 - August 31, 2012
Duration:             13 weeks


Job Description: To be part of the museum team, interacting with visitors to the museum. Occasional assignments which will include assisting with exhibits that portray African Nova Scotian heritage, assisting tourist and researchers in gaining knowledge of Black history and culture.

Duties: Provide guided museum interpretive tours to visitors; assist public in orientation to Centre; conduct youth activity programs; assist in library research by patrons; assist in retail sales in gift shop, assist in museum and display maintenance and upkeep. Update basic web pages and develop web newsletter content. Work Language: English with basic French knowledge would be an asset.

Qualifications:
-University and/or college student (returning to studies)
-General knowledge and interest of African-Nova Scotia History;
-Good verbal and written communication skills;
-Ability to conduct research via internet and library;
-Ability to read/write French would be an asset.

  • have been a full-time student (as defined their educational institutions) in the semester preceding their job with YCW; and intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following their job with YCW.

Digital Curatorial Research Assistant

Job Description: To be part of the museum curatorial team maintaining the archives and digital collection database. Working with a computerized software system to gather digital information via; photo reproduction, scanning, digital photography and document reproduction. Occasional assignments which will include assisting with exhibits that portray African Nova Scotian heritage, assisting tourist and researchers in gaining knowledge of Black history and culture.

Duties: Digitizing and scanning of artifact and photo collection into a digital computer system. Provide guided interpretive tours to visitors; assist public in orientation to Centre; assist in library research by patrons; assist in retail sales in gift shop during peak operational periods. Assist in museum and display maintenance and upkeep. Update basic web pages and develop handout and web information content.

Qualifications:
- University and/or college student (returning to studies)
- Digital graphics computer skills (Photography, Photoshop etc)
- General knowledge and interest of African
-Nova Scotia History;
- Good verbal and written communication skills;
- Ability to conduct research via internet and library;
- Ability to read/write French would be an asset.

Research Assistant / Tour Guide

Rate:                     $10.15 per hour (35 hrs. per week)

The Black Cultural Society, parent organization of the Black Cultural Centre is pleased to offer a summer position as part of the Service Canada Summer Work Program. To apply you must currently be a full time student between the ages of 18-30 and be returning to full time studies in the fall. The job requires knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel and Access.

The successful candidate must be prepared to start work in June and able to work Monday to Saturday's. Job Description Digitize the museum collection: includes: Sort archival photos, photograph artifacts, perform digital scans, save digital images into assigned file folders, back up files, enter identifying information into a museum collection database along with digital images. Assist researchers locate materials of artifacts or photo archive. The student will meet with a supervisor daily for assignments and must have the skills to work without constant supervision.
